Tourist Activities - Levanto
Situated at the door of the Cinque Terre, this town of extraordinary beauty, is lying in a valley of green vegetation, overlooking the sea, in a natural contrast of land and water: "THE SEA AMONG THE HILLS."
Surrounded by various fractions formed by groups of houses clinging to one another, Levanto opens its arms to a wide gulf overlooking the sea, formed by rocks and small beaches interrupted by bathing facilities during summer. But Levanto is not only Summer, because of its historical center and its trails that connect it to Cinque Terre, offers tourists an unlimited season.
The surrounding area and the trails of the Cinque Terre are Regional Park, that’s why Levanto has preserved its natural beauty still untouched, its customs, its predominantly agricultural culture that man has not altered despite the development of times. Just look at the famous "terracing" in order to contain the ground, made from "muretti a secco” that blend with the landscape and match the majestic "Chinese wall".
Here the visitor will be able to forget the car moving on foot through the beautiful trails on the sea, taking advantage of convenient ferries or the frequent trains that connect Levanto to the Cinque Terre and all the coast.
For those who love art, Levanto has important medieval buildings, old walls, the characteristic lane of Old Town (the "caruggi”) with grotesque depictions, the clock tower, and yet the medieval Loggia, old marine market, with a fresco recently discovered and restored, dating back to year 1000.
Of the same period the Church of Sant'Andrea, with central aisles and a rosette on the facade of white marble of Carrara and the majestic castle in strategic position, clearly visible from the sea.
